Visualisation of 2012 ERA data

(Originally posted 11 Dec 2012 on the Victoria University research blog.) I thought I’d share a map of the 2012 public ERA data created by one of my favorite data visualisation tools, Gephi. Scroll around and zoom in the image below.

The network graph was created using 3 node types (Universities are orange circles, 4-digit FOR codes in red, 2-digit FOR codes in pink) with links between only including scores of 3, 4, or 5 (with weights of 1,2 or 3 respectively represented by blue line thickness). Node size represents the degree (number of links). Arrangement of nodes used a force-directed layout algorithm so called “Fruchterman Reingold”, with some expansion and label adjustment for readability. Proximity to the centre of the graph is approximately correlated with the “linkedness” of the node. Full map can be downloaded in high-res here and the Gephi project file can be downloaded here, which should allow you to select nodes and explore links in more detail.
